Job Summary:
The Mission of Walgreens Enterprise Geographic Information Services is to add value to the Walgreen Company and subsidiaries by enabling the organization to make better-informed decisions through the use of mapping, spatial analytics, GIS-related technology integration, and collaboration. Currently, GIS (Geographic Information System) technology is a key component to a wide variety of business units and functions throughout Walgreens. From complex spatial analyses to data translation and manipulation to presentation quality thematic maps, GIS technology is evident and widely recognizable. All of these GIS-related efforts are supported concurrently by the business leadership of the GIS Team within Market Planning and Research and the technology leadership of the Corporate Systems Facilities and GIS IT.
We seek to hire a Project Manager, Geographic Information Services (GIS) who will be responsible for acting as Project manager and leader in the Enterprise Geographic Information Services function. The Project Manager will also be responsible for building, designing and supporting the Enterprise GIS platform; developing modeling and process improvements in other corporate departments (Market Strategy, Advertising, HR, etc.); conducting spatial analysis on key strategic initiatives; and training and development of GIS staff and users in other departments.
Job Responsibilities
- Teams up with the IT-GIS group to build, design, and support the Enterprise GIS platform; involved in all phases of the design of supporting systems, such as Location Database, Competitive Database, Real Estate Packet, Walmap and others.
- Ensures understanding and analysis of the spatial analysis factors resulting in better decision making, focusing on the where, what, and how-many questions.
- Oversees the research of new data sources and methods to further analyze attributes to better serve the customer and to assess competition.
- Directs and focuses research activities of the GIS research staff; manages the planning, scheduling, and evaluation of projects, ensuring timely completion of projects according to specifications.
- Leads support effort of the systematic portion of the on-going analysis of the market strategic of mergers and acquisitions in the retail business units.
- Collaborates and meets with executives from Market Strategy, Real Estate, Advertising, Marketing, Logistics, Recruiting, Government Relations, Mergers and Acquisitions, File Buyouts, ESDR and others to create and prioritize geographic information and analysis needs.
- Creates and maintains a well-known and respected presence in the Geographic Information Services and Retail Research field to attract candidates and ensure influence in the field for intelligence.
- Ensures the development and maintenance of demographic, customer and third party data & models; to result in accurate datasets and models for decision making.
- Mentors, coaches and evaluates staff members; develops employees through orientation, training establishing objectives, communication of rules; builds employee morale, motivation and loyalty.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of experience in GIS, other Spatial Technologies, datasets, and systems development.
- Experience using business analytical skills including facilitating requirements sessions and documenting activity workflows and business requirements.
- Experience using interpersonal communication and presentation skills to present ideas effectively and strategically present ideas to senior level management and external stakeholders.
- Experience with project management (planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives).
- Experience communicating both verbally (on phone, one-on-one, to groups) and in writing (emails, letters, reports, presentations) to all levels of employees and external clients.
- Advanced level skill with in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel (using multiple sheets and workbooks, logical Operators ("AND" and "OR"), creating charts, and pivot tables), Word (creating a mail merge, creating labels, adding form fields, hiding text, recording and running macros, adding tables of contents, inserting footnotes and endnotes, working with XML, and linking to Excel worksheets), PowerPoint (creating and modifying tables, working with graphs and charts, rearranging slides, adding and modifying slide backgrounds, creating a custom design template, adding transitions) and Microsoft Access (designing reports, running database Maintenance (compacting and backup), designing complex forms, creating parameter queries).
- Advanced technical skills with GIS to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations.
- Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in GIS, Geography, or Business preferred
- GISP certification preferred
- Experience working with ESRI (spatial software applications) preferred
- Experience working with Geocortex preferred
- At least 5 years of experience with IT development, design, and processes preferred

Geospatial Engineers in the Army National Guard are trusted advisors to officers, leaders of enlisted Soldiers, and vital conduits in the communications process between the two. As such, you will collect and process military geographic information from decentralized sources (remote sensed imagery, digital data, intelligence data, existing topographic products, and other collateral data sources), present this information to leaders, and return decisions to the field.
You may also:
- Supervise topographic surveying, cartography, and photolithography activities
- Assist in topographic planning and control activities
- Assist in determining requirements and providing technical supervision of geographic intelligence programs
The skills you learn as a Geospatial Engineer will help prepare you for a civilian career with construction, engineering, and architectural firms, as well as with government agencies as a surveyor, mapmaker, cartographer, cartographic technician, or photogrammetrist.

Job training for a Geospatial Engineer requires 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 18 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) and on-the-job instruction, including practical application of geographic information systems. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field.

Description:
The City of Janesville is seeking an independent and hardworking college student to serve as the GIS Mapping Intern for Oakhill Cemetery. This position will allow an individual to acquire GIS and planning experience through the creation of a map layer for Oakhill Cemetery. Training will be provided at the beginning of the internship; however, coursework in geography, urban planning or related field; and experience in ESRI ArcGIS 9 and data entry are beneficial. This new map layer is the foundation for the City’s Cemetery IT strategic plan. The position will last approximately 12 weeks and require 40 hour work weeks during that period.
Objective:
The intern will be responsible for creating a map layer for the Oakhill Cemetery using ArcGIS and entering grave information into the cemetery database. Accomplishing these tasks will lead to the creation of an online database that will identify all cemetery grave parcels and indicate the status of each grave. There will be training sessions at the beginning of the internship to familiarize the intern with the project.
Position Requirements:
* Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, or a related field, and wish to obtain GIS and planning experience.
* Experience with data entry and ESRI ArcGIS 9 is recommended.
* It is preferred that applicants have completed or enrolled in 6 credits of GIS, mapping, or spatial analysis courses in order to complete the project.
