AJ Wortley
WLIA President and Senior Outreach Specialist UW-Madison/State Cartographer's Office

Beginning with my initial involvement in 1998, I have found WLIA to be a key organization in recognizing mutual goals among Wisconsin’s land information professionals and providing a forum for education and innovation through advocacy and shared best practices. One of WLIA's biggest strengths is its breadth and depth of diverse constituents all involved with the GIS/land records lifecycle. This strength also represents our biggest challenge in pursuing advocacy and professional development that is meaningful to all in our respective roles. The times they are a-changin'. And so must our association be prepared to change to accommodate the priority needs of our membership in these times. WLIA is well-positioned to meet this challenge and accomplish much good. I will emphasize renewed communication with, and information gathering from all members to facilitate transparent leadership by your Board of Directors in pursuing the will of the membership.
I serve as a mapping and GIS outreach specialist for the State Cartographer’s Office. My education is in Civil Engineering from UW-Madison with an emphasis on land surveying, land information systems and GIS. My outreach work centers on demonstrating how specific technologies and best practices can support an interoperable and accessible land records infrastructure across Wisconsin. I have given workshops on metadata, webmapping and mashups in support of improved access and use of Wisconsin land records data. I also work to support integrated survey control data access, Wisconsin coordinate systems use and measuring our collective success through a Wisconsin GIS Inventory. My experience serving two terms on WLIA's Board of Directors as well as on multiple task forces and committees over the years has helped shape the intent of my work and my understanding of this community as a whole. I look forward to giving back to this community that has taught me so much.
