Authoritative Weather Data Now More Available!

WLIA_News_Large

Looking for more authoritative sources of weather information.  The National Weather Service (NWS) a component of National Oceanic Atmosphere Administration (NOAA), has started to provide more web based weather services that can be consumed by a GIS.  The NOAA NowCoast program in collaboration with the NWS, officially migrated the NowCoast viewer and web services to ArcGIS technology (previously ArcIMS).  A big change in the mission also happened when doing this.  NOAA now supports these services in critical status, meaning they will support these services 24/7/365.

Many of these data layers were not available for consumption in a usable format for GIS until yesterday by NOAA.  Although some of these layers were available through other means they may not have been official weather feeds.    If you would like to learn more about NOAA’s plan with modernizing weather information to meet your needs please see the recent National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) Geospatial Preparedness Committee meeting presentation by NOAA.
