“Dark Sky” coming to WLIA regional meeting in Delavan

Although it sounds ominous, do not be alarmed! A full-scale training exercise simulating a long-term mass power outage in Wisconsin kicks off May 15 at sites around the state.  Known as “Dark Sky,” the exercise runs May 15-17 in Brown, Calumet, Dane, Fond du Lac, Milwaukee, Outagamie and Winnebago Counties and will test the abilities of private utilities, law enforcement, first responders and the National Guard to respond to the scenario as well as its second and third order effects.

The goal of the exercise is to increase understanding of the coordination, policies, and procedures required to conduct a joint inter-agency response to cyber and physical threats to critical infrastructure in Wisconsin.

Not surprisingly, GIS will play a big role in Dark Sky.  We are fortunate to have Colleen Hermans from Wisconsin Emergency Management present on how GIS was utilized during the Dark Sky exercise at our regional meeting in Delavan, May 31st – June 1st.   With our Regional happening only two weeks after the event, we’re sure Colleen will have some very interesting stories to share!

Register now to see this and a host of other great presentations.
