Proposed UWSP Reorganization Would Eliminate Geoscience and Geography Majors

In a document known as Point Forward and dated November 12, 2018, UWSP Chancellor Bernie Patterson outlined his proposal to reorganize the university. Of interest to many in our association is the proposed elimination of the Geography and Geology Department as well as the elimination of the Geoscience and Geography Majors.

Under the proposal, the GIS program would continue and be housed under a newly created “School of Computing and Information Science.” Geography courses needed to support the GIS program would continue to be taught.

Read the Point Forward Proposal or see the  Point Forward page on the UWSP website for additional information.  UWSP is soliciting feedback through a “Contact Us” form on the Point Forward page.

The December 6th, 2018 meeting agenda of the Education Committee of the UW System Board of Regents includes an update on the Point Forward Proposal.  The Education Committee is not expected to take action at this meeting.  Meeting material is available on the UW System website.

The Stevens Point Academic Representation Council (SPARC), the faculty and academic staff union on the UWSP campus, responded to the Point Forward proposal with an open letter to the UW System Board of regents.

WLIA will provide updates on any significant developments.
