Dr. Kurt W. Bauer, the Executive Director Emeritus, Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC), passed away on December 13, 2020. He was one of the earliest recipients of WLIA’s Friend of Land Records Award in 1997. He will be greatly missed by the Wisconsin’s Land Information Community.
Dr. Bauer was the Commission’s Executive Director from 1961 to 1997. Dr. Bauer was a Professional Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor. He served as the Milwaukee County Surveyor for decades and also fulfilled the position in Walworth, Waukesha, and Kenosha County as well. He also served on faculties at Marquette and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was the author of City Planning for Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, and Surveyors. In addition he was as an original board member of the Milwaukee County Automated Mapping and Land Information Systems (MCAMLIS), one of the earliest Land Information Councils in the state.
It was noted that Dr. Bauer’s leadership and vision built SEWRPC from its infancy. Rob Merry of SEWRPC had the following kind words in regards to Dr. Bauer.
I am very thankful to have worked beside Dr. Bauer. He was a mentor of mine. Knowledgeable, professional, leader, and visionary are just a few characteristics that best describe him. I am thankful for my time working beside him and his contributions to the Commission and Region will be truly missed.– Rob Merry
