Public Records vs. Right to Privacy

Thursday, November 4th, 2021, at the Fall Regional Event in Madison you can hear about how the Wisconsin Register of Deeds Association is preparing for Confidential Records Identity Shielding (CRIS) laws.

We all want to protect the safety of our citizens! But what does privacy shielding do to the integrity of the public record?  Are there unintended property related consequences when it comes to transferring ownership, purchasing and refinancing their properties?  How do we shield the records in all public data sources?  WLIA members have strived to make maps, records, permitting, zoning, and many other records available online. There are Confidental Records Identity Shielding (CRIS)  laws around the country that are being introduced or are already in effect which require the removal or shielding of some records from the internet.

In this session we’ll talk about what other states have done, what works and what needs help.  There are a lot of questions, but what matters is that we are prepared for when it happens, because it’s going to happen. We hope to make Wisconsin’s privacy shielding model the best in the nation.
