Workshop 1:

How to Make Your GIS Maps Accessible and ADA Compliant

By April 2027, the Department of Justice requires state and local government digital maps to be accessible to people with disabilities, including web maps, interactive maps, and PDF maps in publications. This hands-on virtual workshop walks GIS professionals through what accessibility means for a map, how to evaluate their current maps against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and how to make a map something a blind, low-vision, or mobility impaired resident can use and "hear" using the Audiom platform from XR Navigation.io. We will use existing published feature layers from the Esri Living Atlas, but the skills learned during this workshop can be used to make any ArcGIS map accessible.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • know exactly what the 2027 ADA Title II deadline requires for maps and how to check your own maps, and have a practical path to compliance.
  • get to "hear" a live map they created, and experience their GIS data in a completely new way.

Requirements for attendees:

  • A computer with a modern web browser and headphones or speakers.
  • No special software is required.

Workshop Details:

Length:  3 hours

Cost:  $50 (member) & $100 (non-member)
