To answer some FAQs about life on the WLIA Board, read on!

  1. What does it take to be a WLIA Board member?: Good energy, a good idea or two, and a willingness to help WLIA serve its membership! We also insist that you be a WLIA member, because why wouldn’t you?

  1. What does a WLIA Board member do?: Board members guide the work of WLIA, including setting policies and designing programming to support WLIA’s Mission (to develop land information and its community in Wisconsin) for its members and the state as a whole. This covers anything from informing statewide data standards to putting on conferences and virtual events for members to connect and learn.

  1. What is the commitment of being a WLIA Board member?: A board member serves a two-year term, with the first as Vice Chair of one of WLIA’s standing committees and the second as Chair of that same committee. Board members also serve on the Annual Conference planning committee and at least one additional standing committee, based on interest and availability.

  1. How often does the WLIA Board meet?: The board meets monthly on a regular schedule over Zoom, with some meetings altered to happen in-person at our conferences. Infrequent special meetings and email votes are called as needed. The board also meets for a business retreat in late winter to plan the upcoming year. Members are expected to attend all meetings, but arrangements can be made for the occasional absence.

  1. Do I need support from my employer to serve on the WLIA Board?: Not necessarily, but it is helpful. Board members do not receive funding from WLIA or any other source to serve on the Board. Employers are often asked to cover costs for lodging, fuel, and some meals, similar to conference attendance.

  1. Can I nominate myself for the WLIA Board or President-Elect role?: Of course, and we encourage it! Any WLIA member can nominate themselves or other members in good standing. President-Elect nominees must have served at least two full years on the WLIA Board of Directors to run for President-Elect.

  1. What if I lose the election or not even make the ballot? Should I run again?: Absolutely! I ran for the Board four times before I got on! Getting a nomination is still a great way to get your name in front of fellow members and, more importantly, get to know people across WLIA!

  1. What can I do to prepare to run for the Board, now and in the future?: Get involved with our committees, attend WLIA events, and make more friendships with WLIA members! Being involved in WLIA is a journey, one that can be everything you make it out to be!

  1. Where can I find more information and ask questions?: Check out our Bylaws and Admin Manual, or contact Colter Sikora, WLIA Past President.
