Advancing Geospatial and Land Information Systems and Public Policy
Lea Shanley, Ph.D.
Director and CEO, International Computer Science Institute (and former WLIA member!) An Affiliated Institute of the University of California at Berkeley Geospatial technologies and land information systems provide powerful tools for assessing, understanding, and addressing local, state, national, and global challenges, such as land management, agriculture, emergency services, community development, among many others. We have an incredible opportunity and perhaps a civic duty to use these technologies to help inform and improve public policy decision making. If we want policy makers to rely on the best data and information for their decisions, however, we must communicate and translate our work in a way that is easy for them to understand and act upon. Conversely, public policy can help to support and advance geospatial and land information systems, such as the Geospatial Act of 2018. This presentation will explore the challenges, opportunities, and strategies for working with policymakers. |
