Spring Conference Session Spotlight: Configuring ESRI's Utility Network In-House

Posted By: Sara Chiamulera Spring Conference,

Kaukauna Utilities’ (KU) integration of the utility network management system has transformed how they model and manage their infrastructure. This presentation will explore the differences between implementing ESRI’s Utility Network model with the help of a third-party vendor versus in-house, highlighting the opportunities and obstacles associated with each approach. By utilizing ArcGIS's Solutions for the Utility Network Foundation and tools, KU developed an in-house utility network model for a small-sized water distribution company. The implementation of this model resulted in improved data accuracy through data cleaning, field editing and tracing, as well as better integration with existing operational systems.

Kayla Coonen is an Operational Technology Specialist at Kaukauna Utilities (KU), where she has been applying her expertise for the past four years. With a bachelor’s degree in geography and a master’s degree in geospatial sciences from Missouri State University, Kayla brings a strong foundation in GIS and its practical applications across a variety of platforms. She has extensive experience integrating GIS with third-party software solutions, making her a valuable resource in advancing KU’s digital workplace initiative.

In this presentation, Kayla will discuss how KU implemented ESRI’s Utility Network model and the transformative impact it has had on managing their electric and water distribution infrastructure. Attendees will gain insight into KU’s decision to develop the model in-house using ArcGIS Solutions for the Utility Network Foundation, rather than relying on a third-party vendor. The session will outline key challenges and advantages of each approach and highlight how KU’s in-house model improved data accuracy, while also enhancing integration with field operations.
